How to view message headers in Outlook and OWA

Problem:

You were asked by the CodeTwo Customer Success Team to provide them with the message header of your email.

Tip

A message header may not be sufficient for diagnostic purposes. Information on how to prepare a diagnostic email for the CodeTwo Customer Success Team is available here.

If someone else receives a message that might be useful for diagnostic purposes and they want to share its header with you, they should not forward that message to you. Doing so will modify the original message’s header. Instead, they need to complete the instructions from either of the sections below, emailing you a TXT file with the header content as an attachment. If you receive an EML attachment instead, proceed as described here.

Outlook on the web (Microsoft 365)

To view the message header of an email in Outlook on the web (Microsoft 365 / Office 365):

  1. Open an email in Outlook on the web.
  2. Click the ellipsis (...) button in the upper-right corner of the reading pane and choose ViewView message details from the drop-down menu (Fig. 1.).

  1. Copy the entire text from the Message details window (Fig. 2.) and paste it into a TXT file. Use our file upload form to send the files and environment description to CodeTwo Customer Service.

Outlook Web App (OWA)

To view the message header of an email in Outlook Web App (OWA).

  1. Open the email in OWA. Click the down arrow button (Down arrow button) on the right side of the reading pane and select View message details from the drop-down menu (Fig. 3.). In the older versions of Exchange, click the ellipsis button (...) instead of the arrow button.

  1. Copy the text from the pop-up window (Fig. 4.), paste it into a TXT file. Use our file upload form to send the files and environment description to CodeTwo Customer Service.

Outlook for Windows

To view message headers in Outlook for Windows:

  1. Double-click an email in Outlook (or an MSG/EML file) to open it in separate window. If you are prompted to choose an app to open the file with, choose Outlook and click OK (Fig. 5.).

  1. Click the arrow button in the bottom right corner of the Tags group on the ribbon (the Message tab) to display the message’s properties. The message header information will be shown in the Internet headers textbox (Fig. 6.).

    Tip

    Alternatively, you can access the window with message properties by going to File > Properties.

  1. Copy the entire text from the Internet headers textbox in Outlook (see Fig. 6.) and paste it into a TXT file.
  2. Use our file upload form to send the file and environment description to the CodeTwo Customer Success Team.

Outlook for Mac

To view message headers in Outlook for Mac:

  1. Locate the message on the Outlook’s message list and Control-click it (click it while holding the keyboard's Control key).
  2. Choose View Source from the context menu to display the text file with message headers (Fig. 7.).

  1. Select all the contents of the file and copy them.
  2. Create a new TXT file (e.g. by using TextEdit), paste the contents, and save the file.
  3. Use our file upload form to send the file and environment description to the CodeTwo Customer Success Team.
