How to reconfigure CodeTwo Backup to use Microsoft Graph for Microsoft 365 connections

Problem:

Microsoft will start retiring Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online (Microsoft 365) on October 1, 2026, with permanent EWS retirement planned for April 1, 2027.

As a result, your server connections to Exchange Online (Microsoft 365) in CodeTwo Backup are now marked as [reconfig required] and you’re asked to reconfigure them to use Microsoft Graph instead of EWS to connect to Microsoft 365.

Solution:

Follow the steps below to reconfigure a connection in CodeTwo Backup:

1. Go to the Dashboard tab.
2. Click the Manage server connections button on the Defined server connections card. The Manage server connections window will open.
3. Select the connection you want to reconfigure and click Edit (Fig. 1.).

4. Confirm your choice if prompted.
5. Follow the steps in the Exchange connection wizard, as when setting up a new connection.

Once done, you can use this connection to back up and restore mailboxes and public folders in the specified Microsoft 365 tenant.

Can I use an earlier version of CodeTwo Backup to keep using EWS for Microsoft 365 connections?

Yes, you can still use CodeTwo Backup version 2.5.x to connect to Exchange Online (Microsoft 365) using EWS. This will work until April 1, 2027, when EWS is permanently retired in Exchange Online.

To enable this, you need to allow CodeTwo Backup to continue using EWS in Microsoft 365, as described in this article.

What if I already installed CodeTwo Backup 2.6.1.x or later?

If you’ve already updated CodeTwo Backup to version 2.6.1.x (or later), you can easily roll back to version 2.5.x without losing access to data backed up with the newer version. After the rollback, the program will retain the configuration it had before the update.
