Resolving problems with GUI responsiveness

Problem:

When running CodeTwo software, you notice that your program reacts slower to user input over time. Sometimes, the software uses more of your machine’s RAM, which is noticeable on slower systems.

Solution:

Improving GUI responsiveness in CodeTwo Backup

To resolve the issue, you can try deleting alert log files generated by CodeTwo Backup. These files can be found in the ProgramData folder. You need to close the program you are using and delete these files manually. You can also limit the number of alerts stored in the log files by setting alert retention limits.

Deleting alert log files in CodeTwo Backup

To remove alert log files generated by CodeTwo Backup:

  1. If your program is running, stop all jobs.
  2. Close the Administration Panel.
  3. Stop the CodeTwo Backup Service in the Windows Services console.

Important

To stop the service, go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services (or run services.msc), right-click the CodeTwo Backup Service and select Stop from the drop-down menu (Fig. 1.).

  1. Navigate to:
    C:\ProgramData\CodeTwo Backup
If you do not see the ProgramData folder in File Explorer, open the View tab on the ribbon and select the Hidden items checkbox.
  2. Make backup copies of the following files located in that folder:
    • Alerts*.xml (e.g. Alerts_2.xml, Alerts_3.xml, etc.)
    • Alerts*.xml.bak
    • SentGoodNews_3.xml
    • SentBadNews_3.xml

and put them in a different folder. Note that you might have only some of these files in your folder.

  3. Delete the files listed in step 5 from the CodeTwo Backup folder, as shown in Fig. 2. Do not delete any other files from that folder, as you will lose all your settings (jobs, server connections, etc.).

Configuring alert retention limits in CodeTwo Backup

You can improve the program’s overall performance by limiting the amount of information stored in its log files. To do so, you need to shorten the alert retention period, i.e. the duration over which an alert will be kept in the log file before it is automatically removed. Alert retention is controlled by parameters set in one of the program’s configuration files, separately for good news and bad news alerts. When modifying the parameters, set their values as low as possible, remembering that 1 is the lowest value, not zero (0).

To change the alert retention period, follow the instructions in this article.

Improving GUI responsiveness in CodeTwo migration software

To resolve the issue, you can try deleting alert log files generated by CodeTwo Office 365 Migration / CodeTwo Exchange Migration. These files can be found in the ProgramData folder. You need to close the program you are using and delete these files manually. Another solution is to limit the number of notifications (Good / Bad news) displayed in the software's Administration Panel.

Additionally, CodeTwo migration software allows for migrating mailboxes by using matched source and target mailbox pairs, imported from a CSV file. This migration method is less resource-intensive and may improve the performance of the program on a slower machine.

To remove alert log files generated by CodeTwo Office 365 Migration or CodeTwo Exchange Migration:

  1. If your program is running, stop all jobs.
  2. Close the Administration Panel.
  3. Navigate to:
    C:\Program Data\CodeTwo\Office 365 Migration [version no.]\Alerts

    or

    C:\ProgramData\CodeTwo\Exchange Migration [version no.]\Alerts

If the solution above did not help, try removing the statistics files as well:

  1. Stop all jobs and close the Admin Panel.
  2. Navigate to:
    C:\Program Data\CodeTwo\Office 365 Migration [version no.]\Statistics

    or

    C:\ProgramData\CodeTwo\Exchange Migration [version no.]\Statistics

Configuring maximum number of Good / Bad news notifications in CodeTwo migration software

You can define the maximum number of notifications shown on the Good news and Bad news cards in the Administration Panel of CodeTwo migration software. Setting the number to a lower value can improve program’s overall performance (we recommend setting the value to less than 200).

To learn more about this option, consult the following article in the user’s manual of:

Migration using a CSV file

To perform a migration using data from a CSV file, you need to prepare a CSV file containing information about source and target mailboxes. Detailed information on the CSV import and migration process are presented in the user's manual of:
