How to fix problems with CodeTwo Public Folders after Windows 10 upgrade/update

After upgrading your Windows version to Windows 10 or after a major Windows 10 update, you are unable to use CodeTwo Public Folders. The Client Apps are not working properly or the Syncing Master service cannot start and the following message is displayed:

Could not start the Windows service name service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

This problem is a well-known issue that occurs after upgrading to Windows 10 or installing one of the major Windows 10 updates. If you are experiencing this problem with CodeTwo Sync for iCloud, Outlook Sync, or Exchange Sync, please consult this article.

Before you go further ensure that you have the latest available version of the software.


To resolve the issue you can try opening the Programs and Features applet in Control Panel and uninstall the problematic product. Straight after this, install the product again. This should refresh all components of the software and, as a result, the software may restore its functionality.

Please follow the steps below on a machine where the CodeTwo Public Folders Syncing Master is installed:

  1. Hit Windows + R on your keyboard.
  2. Type in the appwiz.cpl command. Press Enter.
  3. Uninstall the CodeTwo Public Folders Syncing Master.

    Be advised that uninstalling the product is a safe operation, since it will not remove your current configuration or data.

  4. Go to this page to download the latest version of the software.
  5. Install the CodeTwo Public Folders Syncing Master again, using the downloaded file.

From now on, you should be able to connect using your Client Apps to the Syncing Master. Keep in mind that your Client Apps version should match the version of the Syncing Master. Otherwise, various errors might appear and the synchronization may not be completed. To ensure that you are running the right version, follow the steps below:

  1. Hit Windows + R on your keyboard.
  2. Type in appwiz.cpl command. Press Enter.
  3. Compare the value in the Version column for the Syncing Master and the Client Apps.

  4. If the value in the Client Apps entry is the same as for the Syncing Master, you do not have to do anything.
  5. If the value in the Client Apps entry is lower than that of the Syncing Master or if the Client Apps are not working properly, you have to update them:
    1. Right-click on CodeTwo Public Folders Client Apps and choose Uninstall.
    2. Uninstall the component.
    3. Install the CodeTwo Public Folders Client Apps again.

From now on, CodeTwo Public Folders should work properly.
