Two-way synchronization
Synchronization of data available in CodeTwo Exchange Sync can be divided into two general types:
- One-Way - involves synchronizing items only in one direction: from the source folders to the target folders. It means that once you create, delete or change any items in the source folder, this will be reflected in the target folder. On the other hand, changes on items introduced to the target folder will not be replicated to the source folder. Furthermore, the one-way synchronization can be defined between more than two folders. Depending on the type of the one-way synchronization, the number of source or target folders may vary and is restricted to your choice.
- Two-Way - in this synchronization type changes introduced on items in source and target folders are reflected in both directions. It doesn't matter if you create, edit or delete items on source or target folder, the change will be replicated to them equally. This type of synchronization is also called a folder ring.
Refer to the information below to learn how to set up and configure two-way synchronization tasks.
Creating new two-way synchronization task
To create a two-way synchronization task, click New in the ribbon of the Administration Panel. In the Synchronization type selection window, expand Synchronization type and choose Two-way synchronization: Folder Ring (Fig. 1.).

Next, enter the name for your task and click OK to add the task to the list of defined synchronization tasks (Fig. 2.).

Once the task is created, click Add in the Folders scheduled for synchronization area to add Exchange folders that will participate in the synchronization process. Please note that in this type of synchronization there is no limit in number of folders chosen to be synchronized.
Important: you can add folders of the same type only. Therefore, the first folder type chosen will determine the choice of the following folders yet no other types will be avilable to be selected.
Note that once choosing Calendar folder type, the Meeting requests won't be synchronized by default.

Once you finish adding folders, click Save - it will trigger the synchronization process. When the synchronization finishes, all folders included in the synchronization task will contain the same items. Therefore, any change introduced in any folder will be replicated to the remaining folders included in the task.
Before the first two-way synchronization task starts, the application does not check whether the synchronized folders contain logical duplicates as the items in the respective folders are not yet interconnected. Therefore, we recommend to make sure that the folders included in the folder ring do not contain the logical duplicates.
Example: In a personal folder of user A, there is a contact item John Doe. A similar contact with the same name, surname is stored in the Exchange public folder. After we run a Two-Way synchronization task, the user A’s folder will contain two John Doe contact items. There will also be two John Doe contacts in the public folder.
